When I backpacked through Big Bend National Park, I really wanted to see a bear.
Big Bend is the only place in Texas where bears are native.
I spent the entire 6 days on the trail sleeping without a tent and never once encountered a bear on the trail.
Of course, hiking with a group of 10 people, we were giving the bears plenty of warning that we were coming.
The only bear I saw was at the visitor center where it came sauntering out of the bush and walked across the parking lot.
Hank the Tank was the nickname given to a large black bear that was breaking and entering people's homes in California.
